"Affordance" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affordance
When we are young and foolish, we only know how to smash a tea cup.
When we are older and wiser, we learn the "affordance" of the tea cup. Once the affordance is mapped into our brain, we can pick up a tea cup and drink tea from it; not just the tea cup we used to use, but even the ones we have not seen before, we still know how to handle it.
When we first learn to drive a car, it was awkward. We have to remember how to turn the steering, when to change gear. Once we are experienced, we do not have to worry ourselves on how to turn, how to change gear. We just wish to go somewhere and our body/brain will do the rest on autopilot. Not just with our own car, but with just about any car. We can even feel the texture of the road; even though really, we are just feeling the vibrations on our bum!
So, the mental shift should be, not just to smash or over power the opponent, but to map the "affordance" of the opponent into our brain. All human are roughly the same shape and build. If you know ten tea cups, you would know all tea cups.
先知己,後知人;然後才人不知我,我獨知人。這不是招式上的功夫,而是心法和經驗。
Cheers,
John
